Easter

We had a lot of fun for Easter this year.  Kail did a couple of different egg hunts, and got WAY to much candy.  We tried to prep him for his Day Care egg hunt buy having him hunt for eggs in the kitchen and put them in his bucket the night before.  He loved it.

At Day Care they let the kids find all the eggs and then redistributed them so that everyone got the same amount.  However they had a bit of a problem as Kail decided to redistribute his eggs into the other baskets a couple of times as well as taught the other toddlers that the eggs open and have candy.  

Then we headed down to Gunnison for Great Grandma Hatch's fabulous annual egg hunt.  Kail got very spoiled by his grandma's and again got way too much candy.

And then as if this little one didn't get spoiled enough for Easter all ready. Grandpa Larry and Grandma Jackie got him a chair that is just his size.  He likes to sit on it and have us read to him.

They also gave him a wall plaque with his name on it to hang his stuff from and some sidewalk calk.  Its been too rainy to use the caulk yet but Kail sure does want to get it open.

16 Month Old Storytime

March & April

We have been busy the last few weeks.  Kail had his first experience with a pool.  I'll admit he was not a big fan of actually being in the water, but he thought it was funny that if he waved his arms the rest of us would splash the water.  He did lean over and fall in on accident once, Daddy has very quick reflexes.

We also took a trip to Gunnison, Where we had lots of fun chasing poor Lucy. and running around outside.  Clearly we had a lot of fun with cousin Nora too.

On nice days sometimes Kail gets to go to the park.  He really discovered the joy of being outside while in Gunnison and loves doing anything as long as its outside.

We took our first trip to the library.  We went to the one downtown because of their really cool kids area and then mom and Kail got to spend some time feeding the pigeons outside.

Kail has become obsessed with rocks and thought we could bring some home if he hid them from mom first.

We also went to City Creek mall to feed the fish and run around.

Sorry I just thought this one was cute.

Kail discovered our Easter egg stash, he likes to put them in his "oven".  

His favorite toy and Daycare is their kitchen set.

Kail loves to read books, His favorites include a book about a Duck and Cat who become friends.  His thinks its funny when the Cat quacks and the Duck Meow's.  But what he really loves is sitting with Daddy and looking at his Star Wars books.

Ear Tubes

On Feb 24th we took Kail back to Davis Hospital for another "surgery" with his ENT.  This time Dr Stock put tubes in Kails ears.

At Kails 15 month doctor check up we discussed Kails somewhat delayed speech, multiple ear infections and continued lack of sleeping through the night and decided it all may be related to the constant water in his ears.  So on February 17th I took him back to the same ENT who did Kails throat scope.  Dr Stock checked Kails ears again mentioning the huge amount of ear wax this kid produces but also the fact that again Kail had water on his ears.  We then had a hearing test which involved me sitting in a booth with Kail and having different toy animals make noises to see how Kail reacted.  Even from my perspective it was pretty clear he wasn't responding until the noises got pretty noticeable.  The test determined that Kail was only hearing about 25% of what he should have been.  They also actually measured the amount of water in his ears with something that looked to me like a ear bud.  The Dr determined that Kail was not only a candidate for ear tubes he said he "would almost consider it child abuse not to give him ear tubes".  Add to this the fact that again we had to stop taking Kails antibiotics for an ear infection due to a head to toe rash and Jordan and I agreed enthusiastically to the tubes.

The night before the procedure Kail woke up at 1 AM screaming again and couldn't lay down for more then 15 min.  We knew he had an ear infection "again" or rather that the last one probably never got cleaned up, reaffirming our decision to put the tubes in as soon as possible.  It was a long night. So when it came time to jump in the car and head to the hospital at 5:30 AM it could not have come soon enough.  We waited for about an hour for the procedure to begin watching cartoons but the procedure itself only took about 10 min from the time they walked away with him fully awake to the time we were told to go get him screaming in the post op room.

I don't think he was actually in a lot of pain as once we were walking out of the hospital he acted totally normal, no more crying for the rest of the day but he really didn't want to be at the hospital anymore.  We were informed that there was a very good amount of "yellow water" behind his ears and that he would be draining for a couple of days.  One of his ears honestly didn't drain much but the left one drained a good amount of pussy blood for about three days.

Unfortunately for the last week he has not been sleeping through the night but he isn't waking up as often and seems more like he just needs to be untangled from blankets to go back to sleep rather then being in pain.  We will be doing a follow up hearing test in about 3 weeks to make sure everything got cleared up but just from his happy behavior I'm going to say it was absolutely worth it.

On a side note last night we tried putting Kail in an "overnight diaper" Kail is ridiculously wet in the morning and we were thinking maybe his diaper makes him uncomfortable.  Miraculously he woke up for about 1 min at 11 needing to be unstuck from the crib rail and then I woke up to Jordan's alarm . . . . that would be a first in 15 months people, I even had to go wake him up after I got ready for the day!  Fingers crossed this becomes a pattern.

Tails, Scails & Feathers

We have been having animal fun lately.

The cats or at least Meelow have started to warm up to Kail, this might have something to do with letting Kail feed the cats treats or perhaps because he doesn't pull their hair as much but in any case the one word besides Mama and Dada (which are still not necessarily Jordan and I) that Kail says clearly is Meelow.  He used to say kitty but now they are all just Meelow or possibly meow . . . not sure on that one but its cute nonetheless

 We also spent a very cold half hour at Sugar House park the other day.  It wasn't really planned out so we didn't have anything to feed the geese but there was a very nice couple who kept throwing bread and fries around Kail to make the geese mob him.

And finally we took Kail to this place called Scales and Tails (https://www.scalesandtailsutah.com) they usually take their animals around to schools or birthday parties and whatnot but on Saturdays you can just go to where they house all the animals and walk around.  The handlers let you touch everything from the giant tortoises to the alligators and boa constrictors, very smelly but pretty cool.  Kail was really good about touching everything, we were worried he would pull a snakes tail or on the other side be too scared but he was very interested and gentile with everything.  I probably could have gotten more pictures but I too was busy touching snakes.

Doctors, Stores, Museums and the Backyard

Since the day Kial was born he has always pulled on his ears.  So we always worry that they are bugging him and never know when it might be an ear infection.  He is such a happy little boy he doesn't let you know anything is wrong until its really wrong.  Jordan got to take a trip to St George with his Dad and Jonahs to visit his grandpa a few weeks ago and so of course that night Kail woke up screaming.  We stayed up most of the night and luckily my pediatrician has Saturday hours so I was able to get him in and looked at.  Of course I thought it was due to his very nasty cough but no turns out it was a bad ear infection again.  Two weeks later we went back for his 15 month shots and found out that the antibiotics had not cleaned it up much.  I should have figured they were not working when three days into the five day sequince he had a fevor of almost 103 but I guess I was being special again.  So again he is on a different antibiotic and we are now headed to  the ENT doctor to look at getting tubes in his ears.  We figure Kail is always tugging at his ears because he ALWAYS has fluid behind them.  The doctor believes this may also be why although he goes to sleep in his bed at night without a single fight he wakes up inconsolably screaming bloody murder at least once a night, and why at 15 months old he is still not really talking the way he "should" be.  I always feel bad when I find out he has a bad ear infection because I must wait to long to take him to the doctor but seriously this is what he looks like two minutes before the doctors office visit where the doctor tells me he must be in a lot of pain all the time.  

This was IHOP for breakfast after being up from 1:00 AM screaming all night.  I'll keep you all up to date on the ear thing but for now he is on a very nice antibiotic that per the doctor "will kill EVERYTHING".  And two days later he is now sleeping much better.

We FINALLY have a grocery store that isn't 20-30 minutes away from the house.  Its actually across the street from Day Care so about a 5 min walk from our house.  Yes its increased traffic which drives Jordan nuts but it has our bank and a pharmacy, and very nice deli and everything else you could want in a grocery store (no clothes but you get the idea) and I am loving it.  I went to get Kails antibiotics here while Jordan was out of town and after seeing what I was picking up the bagger helped me out of the store to my car so I could get Kail out of the cold faster "with a bad ear he shouldn't have to be in this cold wind".  I've never actually been to a store that would help me like that.  Also Kail likes the carts he can "drive" around.

Yes that is a nasty bump on his head.  He took a head dive into the corner of a book shelf at Day Care while chasing a baby around the room.  It was literally two seconds after a drooped him off so I was still in the room.  This picture is actually a week after it happened, you should have seen how bad it was, I thought he was going to end up with a black eye.


Kail has discovered the ability to walk around stores.  Its fun watching him discover things but what is really funny is watching him try to dodge the lights on the floor that move as you walk.  Its really bad in the grocery store.  These are things adults who don't notice the floors so much anymore just don't think about.

We went to Lowes the other day to fix our toilet handle and Kail had a blast exploring the sprinkler aisle.

Kail is still loving day care, to the point where sometimes although I always get a hug when I arrive, he doesn't necessarily want to go home when I show up to pick him up.  He is happy I'm there, but thinks maybe mommy will just stay and play.  He still gets dropped off in the baby room in the morning but then he moves to the toddler room which has more grownup toys, his favorite is the kitchen set, no surprise as he loves to watch Jordan cook, and we get to have fun weekly activities.

This last weekend Jordan's cousin Rachel who works at the Leonardo Museum kindly let us come visit.  We had so much fun!

 There was a curved mirror that made it look like your own reflection was reaching out to touch you. 

And there were robots that had buttons we could push that made noise.

And there was a big plain that we were able to get inside and drive.  This of course had many buttons and switches to play with.

The next day was (for the first week in February) pretty warm, so for at least few minutes we got to go run around in the back yard.  We thought Kail would like to ride his four wheeler around but he ended up just sitting on it a lot.  He is going to love running around the backyard this summer.
