Great Grandpa Pace

My grandfather, Kail's great grandpa passed away.  We were very grateful to be able to spend time with family to celebrate his life.  And we were very grateful that Kail was such a patient little boy throughout the service.

Dwayne Milton Pace passed away at age 95 on July 12, 2016 at his home in Wanship, Utah of causes related to his advanced age.  The youngest child of Ellen Harriet Tree and James Edwin Pace, he was born in Hoytsville, Utah on September 4, 1920.  He grew up on a dairy farm with his siblings; Julia, Harvey, Ralph, Henry, and Angus.  After graduating from North Summit High School he served a mission in southern California.  After his mission he enlisted in the Navy during WWII and was mostly in the Philippines for two years.  When the war ended he attended BYU where he fell in love with Joan Jensen from Huntsville, Utah.  They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on May 19, 1948.  They lived in Wanship and were the parents of six children; Dennis, Loyal, Kevin, Lorna, Nolan, and Eric.
Dwayne worked as a dairy farmer in partnership with his brother, Angus.  Dwayne retired from farming in 1979 at the age of fifty-nine.  Dwayne and Joan went on several missions; Dulce New Mexico, Manila Philippines Temple, Atlanta Georgia Temple, Temple Square, and the Conference Center in Salt Lake.  They also served for over twenty-five years in the Ogden Temple as temple ordinance workers.  His daughter, Lorna, and all of his siblings have preceded him in death.  Currently, Dwayne and Joan have thirty-six grandchildren and sixty-five great grandchildren.  
Dwayne leaves a legacy of kindness, decency, hard work, and faith.  His actions always spoke louder than his words.  He loved Joan with constant devotion and she gave great care to him during his last months at their home.  His whole life was spent giving to his family, church, community, and the world.  God blessed him with a long and grand life.  He is a noble person, a great example, and is loved by so many.   
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 16, 2016, at the Wanship Ward Chapel.  A viewing will be held from 11:00 AM to 12:45 PM prior to the funeral.  Interment will be at the Wanship Cemetery.

I would also like to mention that we said goodbye to Grandma Jackie's father Bob  the same week as well.  I didn't get any picture of the service but it was a really nice one.  We love you Grandma Jackie and are so sorry for your loss.

3 Month Helmet Update

We got "a little" rounder this month, but we are still not there.  Sadly we have at least one more if not two more months in this blasted helmet.  We will admit, all three of us are getting pretty fed up with the stinky little thing.  That being said, we are glad we chose to use it as you can clearly see there has been a drastic improvement from the first picture to the last.

Our Happy Little Boy

As long as we are on the move, Kail is a very happy little boy.  He really does get bored easily though.  Its worth the smiles to keep active though.

This last week I was able to spend a couple of days home with him.  We got to go for a lot of walks around the block and at Walmart to try and stay active.  We even went to eat lunch by the fountain at Farmington Station.  It was a really nice outing.

The Cough, The Rash, and the Hospital

Due to Kail going to Day Care, he gets sick pretty often,  About a week after he got his helmet he came down with a nasty cough.  We saw his doctor for his six month apt not long after and she thought we would just wait it out a bit, with a humidifier, and warm baths and such.  Three weeks later he wasn't getting better so I took him in again, again they said we should just wait it out, but they wanted to see him again in two weeks.  So AGAIN I took him in (so he has had the cough for about 6 weeks at this point) this time they decided to start him on an inhaler and some Zantac (they thought acid might be making it worse).  A week later not only was he not any better but Jordan and I decided he was actually getting worse as he was now gasping in the middle of coughing.  So I called the doctor again and they called me in some Amoxicillin.  Three days after starting the Amoxicillin Day Care called me about 1:00.  They had noticed a slight rash on his cheeks in the morning but it was very faint.  It had now spread to his arms and legs and although it was faint there, his face was swelling and the rash was now blood red. This picture doesn't do it justice, trust me the rash looked bad.

 My immediate thought was that he is allergic to Penicillin, although I quickly learned that that rash usually starts on the chest and he had nothing on his chest or back .  So I called the Dr and made an apt to come right in.  Its always a fun visit when the Dr says "That's just SO weird" about 20 times, and finishes the visit with, "I need you to take him to Primary Children's tonight and get a full blood work up".  I kept asking "Isn't this just the Ampicillin?" and he kept saying "if it is, its not progressing like normal."  and my favorite line "I don't want to freak you out, but I want you to go over as soon as possible so we can get the results tonight and we will call you asap just encase he needs to stay at the hospital. If he doesn't stay at the hospital I need to see him again tomorrow."  So we go pick up Jordan and head over to Primary Children's hospital.  Kail had to get blood drawn so they had Jordan hold him and had another nurse there to help hold him so he did flail around the with needle, but our little trooper never even flinched.  then we headed down to the suction clinic where they had to stick a Q-tip up his nose.  The tech had me sit down with him to hold him because 'they really don't like this", and again Kail just sat there like nothing happened (this time is more likely because i suck out his nose so often he just doesn't care anymore).

Kail's Dr called us about a half hour later to tell us that all the results came back normal, and he didn't have the measles. . . . well I guess its good he didn't have the measles i didn't realize that what we were thinking he had. So we went back to the Dr the next day.  At this point I'm convinced its a reaction to the amoxicillin, but the Dr keeps insisting its not and he wants me to start him back on it.  Oh and we have no idea what the rash was . . . .  Jordan and I decided to wait an extra day to let the rash subside more, so that when it came back we could prove it was the amoxicillin . . . . the thing is, it didn't come back.  So I started thinking, we went on a walk the night before and it was hot . . . ya bet it was heat rash although again that is usually were the kid has clothes and this was everywhere he didn't.  As we can't know for sure what happened that is what we have decided,.  Probably just the first sign that our little strawberry blond is going to have an adversarial relationship with the sun.

And on a final happy note, the antibiotics finally got rid of his cough.

Helmet Update

So Kail has now had his helmet on for two months and while his head shape looks a lot better then it did when he started, as you can see in this picture, there was virtually  no movement in the last month.

If you want to get technical we need him to have a Cephalic Ratio (https://www.cappskids.org/cephalic-index-what-do-the-numbers-mean/) in the 80's, He started at 96, at one month he was at a 93 and two month he was at a 92.  Although we are happily closer to the mild side rather then moderate to sever side of the spectrum.

So what this technical mumbo jumbo means is that he is still considered flat.  Having no movement for the month is not considered "abnormal" or "bad" its just that he didn't have a growth spurt that month and we now have to extend the amount of time he has to wear the stupid thing out a month (end of August).  At least we hope its only a month, again depends on a growth spurt.  So weirdly everyone pray he gets bigger . . . . I can't believe I just said that.

6 Month Photos

Yes we are those weird parents who get professional photo's done of their kid.  But of all the things I will frivolously spend my money on over the years, I think good photo's are the one thing I will still love when I'm old.  So here he is. 6 month old Kail.  In spite of how sick he was feeling, she really got some good shots.

On The Move

Kail has become a very active little boy, he LOVES to go go go.  In fact its to the point where he gets bored very quickly.  He is bored of the TV and he is bored of his toys and will let you know he is bored.  Sitting in front of the TV while he plays with toys no longer works, he HAS to be entertained.  So we try and go on a lot of walks.  And nothing entertains him like people watching (and flirting) at Walmart.  He loves to sit in the cart and dance to the music playing in the store while grinning at anyone he can get to notice him.  And with his helmet, LOTS of people notice him.

 

If we are going to stay home for the night, mom and dad have to be entertaining, which includes dancing to music, playing with his toys, reading books and jumping out from behind corners at mommy.

 

The Tin Foil is to keep the aliens from stealing him.

 

On very rare occasions, usually when we are sleepy, we get to sit for just a minute, but only if something really entertaining is on like King Julianne (from Madagascar). Or if daddy is playing video games.

 

 



Eating and Sleeping

Kail has really begun to enjoy eating.  The other day at Grandpa and Grandma Mitton's house he discovered the ability to play with his food while he eats it.  SOME of it still got in his mouth, I'm just not sure how much, and I was very very grateful that we had taken his helmet off before this episode. 



 

 

Along with playing with his food he now really likes to feed himself.  We are working on fine motor skills but he still can’t quite get the cheerios in his mouth.  He does, however, do really well with veggie straws, and now if mom and dad are eating he has to feed himself as well.  Also sadly the booster chair we have been using to feed him in is having to be retired for the highchair for a while as he has discovered he can use his feet to push backwards and we are afraid he is going to push is way right off the table.

Everyone keeps telling me larger babies sleep through the night faster and better . . .  Kail however douse not agree with these people.  He has slept through the night 3-4 times in the last 7 months but never two nights in a row.  Even when we keep him up from 3-4 in the afternoon until bedtime at 8:30-9:00 he will wake up in the night and demand to be fed.  It’s not uncommon for it to be 2-3 or even 4 times a night still. (Those nights are painful).  We are not sure if this is because of the teething as he is pretty upset when he wakes up a lot and clearly wants to be asleep but is too upset to sleep.  Mom sure would love to get some sleep but on the other hand, quiet time just rocking in the chair with him at night and cuddling is nice and he is very cute when he goes back to sleep.

Baby Sitting/Play Dates

We are VERY lucky to have family nearby who are willing and able to watch Kail for a few hours so Jordan and I can go see a movie once in a while (or go to the hospital, you know whatever).  Its fun because Grandma and Grandpa also tend Kail's cousins so he gets to play with Hadley and Remi.  Remi is about 14 months older then Kail but they are pretty close to the same size.  Kail loves these "play dates"  and mommy does too as they seem to help him sleep through the night.
